  • Chasan Lake Incident.

I saw this event in a game of HOI2 but I can't seem to find much about it in the English language. Can someone please tell me more about it? According to Paradox the Japanese used to probe Soviet defenses in the far east and the Chasan Lake Incident was just another case of Japanese military forces crossing the border between the Soviet far east and Manchuria. Any links on this event would be appreciated.

It would also be interesting to hear about the battle of Khalkin Ghol near the village of Nomonhan where General Zhukov first practiced his method of using massed tanks and motorized infantry in flanking & encirclement operations which he would later use to great effectiveness against Nazi forces.

      I did find this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khalkhin_Gol

Wiki calls it the battle of Khalkin Gol which involved forces of the Soviet Far East Army & the People's Army of Mongolia vs the Manchurian Army of the Empire of Japan & the Army of Manchukuo.

Not that obscure to old wargamers.
It al date back to one (of three) of the conventions of Peking (1860s) the one setting the border between China and Russia, BS surrounding this treaty and subsequent additions led to several border conflicts between China and Russian and then between Japan and Russia/Soviet Union.

Wiki's take on the battle of Lake Khasan between the Army of the Japanese Empire and the Soviet Army of the Far East. The USSR was backed up by the People's Army of Mongolia while the Japanese were backed up by Army of Manchukuo.

Just relax. If it's not in Wikipedia, it didn't happen.

I almost laughed when I saw this book at a Borders in DC. Couldn't believe someone would be geeky enough to devote 1276 pages to a battle as obscure as Nomonhan.

Apparently that book got him in the NY Times Obits in 1999.

"Dr. Coox wrote or collaborated on 10 scholarly books. His reputation rested on his two-volume 1,200-page magnum opus, ''Nomonhan: Japan Against Russia, 1939'' (Stanford, 1988). It told of Japan's crushing defeat by the Soviet Union in 1939, when the two powers fought over a few miles of barren land between Mongolia and Manchuria"
