  • How Computer Savvy Are You.

I get the basics well enough. When I had a desktop I changed out hard drives and such and did a little tinkering. I know enough to follow directions. I know enough not mess with things I don't need to be messing with. Took the basic programing in High School on those Zenith dinosaurs. Don't expect me to be hacking into the Pentagon anytime soon though.

Decentish programming skills in C, C++, Fortran. Good knowledge of unix environments, bash etc. On the hardware side I'm handy enough to swap out a hard drive or similarly trivial task.

I have always assembled my desktop PCs myself, except one time (and that box caused me lots of troubles). I used to work as a programmer and I can still whip up a tool that will automate something boring. I know next to nothing about serious network administration, but I maintain all the computers and the wireless network in our home.

Whenever I think I've made significant strides in my knowledge, I get brought back to earth.
This morning, the pc was off. Start button wouldn't fix it. It took me a few minutes, and a 2nd look, to see that a cat had unplugged it.

I can assemble my own computer by myself. I used to edit civ1's .exe and mod units and buildings.
Now I do some programing to help automate some of my own work. Mostly VBA.

Not very. I know how to attach pictures. That's about it.

I put together and maintain my own boxes and know Basic, Perl, and PHP pretty well. Haven't dealt with assembly since the 6510 days as a kid, but knew it pretty well at the time.

Got through college by providing IT work for smallish businesses. But that was a few years ago.

As time marches on, I'm becoming much less savvy.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I once hacked into WOPR (if you don't know what that is you need to brush up on the classics)

                        as for my real response...

I'm decent at computers. My mom thinks I know everything and should get a job in it. I suppose I could learn, but working with computers never interested me. Computers are a hobby, not something I want to do every waking hour (think of the carpal tunnel I'd get )

Took 2 years of computer science in high school. Freshman year was Commodore 64's . Second year was IBM's- not sure of the model. By my senior year my school had Apples (2 e's I think? ), but I wasn't in a computer class at the time. Then I went into the military and never touched a computer till 1995. Got my first PC. A friend upgraded it, learned alot there. Later bought another computer, upgraded that one myself. Then bought a refurb, and later upgraded that one as well.

As time goes on I'm lagging a bit. But I'm smart enough that I feel I can learn anything and do anything. Just recently researched how to set up a home networking system as I may be doing it for a friend. I know I'm too nice, but I don't mind as I learn alot in the process. As the above example shows, I'm not familiar with stuff I never had to use. Home networking and wireless technology is one of them. I've never owned a laptop, as I never needed one.

At work I use micrsoft Office applications. But I generally only use the basics. But with practice I could get really good at designing stuff. But I'm not that creative or artistic. So my stuff is designed for functionality, not appearance. My computer use at work is limited. I like how computers are supposed to save time, but in actuality it takes more time to input all this stuff onto a computer than it does to write it down and give it to your relief.

I have worked as a programmer for a couple of years, I know more than average about how Windows works, but doesn't know much about Administration of network, accounts, etc

Whenever I buy a new computer I handpick the hardware. Usually I just let the company I buy it from assemble it (too lazy to do it myself), but I have built several computers myself (including the one I'm using right now). Of course whenever I'm just changing some hardware, like graphics card, harddrives, etc, I'll do it myself

I have tried to mess about around with Ubuntu, but that was years ago and never got into it. I have also tried using a Mac a few times, and hated every second of using it (it's been many years since last time though, can't remember anything specific. But the more I hear about it, the less likely it is that I'll ever try it again)
This space is empty... or is it?
