Selling products internationally often creates in inadvertent problems.

The most well known is Chevrolet's problems selling the Chevy Nova in Mexico. In the U.S. a nova is a new star, bright in the heavens -- a wonderful name. However, in Spanish "no va" means "no go." Who wants to buy a car that doesn't go?

Exxon chose its name after doing an extensive name check. No language in the world has a word with a double x. So essentially, "Exxon" is just a nonsense word, but it doesn't insult anybody anywhere.

"Nigaz" probably means something totally innocent and appropriate in Russian. However, its use internationally is going to be misunderstood and will anger some people. Does the oil company really want this hassle?

Do we make the embassy of "Niger" change its name? No.

That being said, yes the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the country will be out in force getting their desperately wanted few days of air time over this.
