I'm not sure which side of the argument you are on, but it's very simple to be prepared for situations like the one he put himself and his wife into. If you know you are going to head off the beaten path the very least you should do is to pick up a PLB. The most important thing you should do is to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. That's common sense, even for walking up to the store to buy a gallon of milk.

Had he done either of those things chances are his wife would still be alive.
