As was said, show isn't in the continuity of the movie franchise. The paradox that is created is puzzling, but a common paradox when dealing with time. In the future you travel back to see why a fire burned down an old building, when there you accidently knock over a lantern and start a fire, then you return to the future. Hence the fire from the past wouldn't of happened without your eventual travel, but you wouldn't travel unless the past event happened. So how does the original continuity begin unless time is written and there can be no changing it.

What happened from T1 is we entered a different time line. And same goes for T2, as that skewed into another time line. The inevitable is that SkyNet comes online. It was already set in stone and couldn't be changed. Thus the future is set and cannot be reveresed. T3 came of that, time found a way to correct itself. Then T3 changed the timeline (remember that in the original future 1 2 and 3 technically shouldn't of happened, because if they had then John would have a much better understanding of the current time line. Knowing prior to that that someday in his time terminators would look like Arnold, thus always taking them out and never getting them inside. But he didn't so thus timelines always skew from alteration.)

I always walk into a movie expecting a coherent plot, I am often disappointed.

I knew ahead of time that Terminator did not have a coherent plot, I had no idea just how incoherent it was going to be but since I wasn't expecting anything in the first place that did detract from the joy of watching metal skeletons rip humans limb from limb. Now when they failed to show THAT, then I got a bit ticked off.

Timothy Zahn wrote a prequel for the movie which explains that:

            1. T4 is set about a decade before John sends Kyle Reese back in time. John is not the Resistance leader yet.

            2. The doc is indeed his wife, and is preggo with his kid.

            3. The laser guns we see in the previous movies are still only a rumor and have not been deployed yet.

Can we stop these threads yet?

In T5 they will clear up the timeline by sending a Terminator into the future (ours, their past) to kill the universe and keep the paradox from ever happening. Easy

The next installment takes place when the Terminator gets stuck by lighting and ends up in 1885

They did something like that in Sarah Connor Chronicles. A Termie is sent back in time to assassinate the governor of California during a speech in a building build in the 1930s, or some such, wasn't Arnie, mind, but ends up in 1920, the timetravel causing a fire, that kills the son of the person, who ended up building the building, who then doesn't want to build it. So the termie does his thing, gets influence and money, first by armed heists, and ends up building the building. Then he seals himself behind a wall opposite the speakers stand, where the governor will make his speech, waits there for 80 years with a tommy gun, and then gets terminated by Glauinator, as some called her.

                  A great episode.

As for the movies, there is supposedly an original timeline, where John Connor is just an ordinary chump, father unknown, with no knowledge of future, and just ends up being the right guy at the right time. He is the man, who sends Kyle Reese back in time. He has also never appeared in any films.

That would have been the timeline before Christian Bale got involved.

His mission was the kill the governor, not prevent his existence.
