Edison's intelligence was off the scale. I suspect that having to deal with people dumber than himself every single day of his life did desensitize him as to how these stunts might look. Tesla was smarter than Edison, and the two were the only contempories besides Einstein smart enough to talk to one another. Of course, that isn't how it worked out.
