  • [serious] One of my co-op students is a Mac fanboy

Is it bad form to smack him down or should I embrace his wide-eyed enthusiasm and force him to code in Objective C for the iPhone until he cries for mercy?

It's all I can do to refrain from schooling him on his ideas. He insists the Mac UI is "more efficient and functional", which is patently absurd. He thinks Expose is more useful than the taskbar, because randomly positioned and randomly scaled windows you need to click with the mouse is better. He doesn't think I should buy a $280 fanless nettop PC for a media server and instead buy a Mac Mini because it "looks cooler"

My current approach to deal with him is to make him develop Android (Google) apps while the other co-op works on the iPhone, which he lusts after. But he won't stop talking about how great Apple is. I need to pull out the big guns and let him see why Xcode and the iPhone and Objective C suck to develop for, especially compared to Android.

His unbridled enthusiasm is very creepy. I don't know what to do.

Eat lunch with him. Don't say a word. Just stare.

Destroy his enthusiasm. Make him dread working for you, make him fear work, never let up on him and never give him a break.

      And give us regular updates
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Should I make him write Windows Mobile apps?

That's painful enough as is, I can't imagine a Mac fanboy having to do it.

            No.

This reminds me. He's very loud! And enthusiastic!

And everything is SO AMAZING! And RIDICULOUS! Like OMG.

He'll say "That's so ridiculous!!" about 100 times a day. And "That's so amazing!!" another 100 times.

When you say something that stuns him he'll take a step back, open his eyes very very wide and put his palms facing the sky while waving them around going "Wha wha wha wha WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?" usually followed by "THAT IS SO RIDICULOUS!!" and a constant laughter.

              Creepy.

Android runs on Linux. Already on that one.

Worse yet, it's Java on Linux. I thought that'd kill him, but the ****er is resilient.

                  No.
I did smack him down the other day when he got into an argument about the utility of reflection and code injection. It was a hilariously geeky one-sided smackdown that my manager enjoyed immensely, but I don't think he comprehended it. He's too young.

He keeps trying to tell me how great Haskell is as a language. I tell him F# is better, but he argues otherwise -- having never used it.

He's going to be the biggest MS fanboy ever in 3 months. Just watch.

Remove his keyboard and make him code using wondows onscreen keyboard.

That'll **** him up real good.

                      This reminds me!

He "HATES" Windows keyboards. The first thing he did when he saw our Mac graveyard in the server room is steal one of the iMac G3 keyboards to use on his PC!

Remove that keyboard, claiming health and safety reasons and force him to use a microsoft keyboard Then if he refuses give him the smack down and threaten him with the sack.

I'm trying to find an IBM Model M keyboard, which we may have...but I don't think he's worthy of such technical perfection.

He also argued with me that the mouse is stupid. You should be able to do everything from the keyboard as it is "ALWAYS BETTER AND FASTER". Which is absurd.

I pointed out that the Taskbar is keyboard-friendly while Expose is not and you should've seen him do his patented:

Don't give him perfection. Give him **** for a fortnight, month at the most, then give him the good stuff.
