  • Senate proposes raising taxes on alcohol...

... in order to pay for health care reform.

Beer tax on tap for health care?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers in the United States may have to hand over nearly $2 more for a case of beer to help provide health insurance for all.

Details of the proposed beer tax are described in a Senate Finance Committee document that will be used to brief lawmakers Wednesday at a closed-door meeting.

Taxes on wine and hard liquor would also go up. And there might be a new tax on soda and other sugary drinks blamed for contributing to obesity. No taxes on diet drinks, however.

Beer taxes would go up by 48 cents a six-pack, wine taxes would rise by 49 cents per bottle, and the tax on hard liquor would increase by 40 cents per fifth. Proceeds from the new taxes would help cover an estimated 50 million uninsured Americans.

Good god. The midterm elections can't come quickly enough...

I think you've already proven that you can't tell the difference between a good idea and a terrible one in the thread on Chrysler.

Yes, but you also think it's a good idea to take away the right of individuals to contract collateralized loans, so your opinion on pretty much anything involving money is worthless.

Dude, why the **** are they only raising the tax on liquor by 40 cents a bottle if they're going to raise the tax on beer by 48 cents a sixer?

                WTF?

I'm guessing that the senator from Tennessee had something to do with that...

Those are all great ideas. Besides making beer is as easy as baking bread so if you get tired of paying the tax just home brew and avoid paying any taxes.

I've often made beer at home in the past and I still have all the stuff to do it. It really is as easy as baking bread. It's cheaper then buying it as well once you have the limited necessary gear.
