How does that have anything to do with whether Atheists are ostracized or not?

People want elected officials whoa re like them. Most people are religious (in the US).

So any elected official will at the least pretend to be religious so that people can identify with him.

I seem to remember as of 2004 there was only one Congressman who was self-described atheist. I don't remember whether he was in House or Senate. Given that it's been five years since, he may have disappeared in the interim.

So much for separation of church and state.

Not holding elected office=ostracism? That isn't what I consider ostracism, but whatever.

Maybe not ostracism, but there remains a significant anti-atheist bias in society at-large.

True, but if you're talking about "community" ostracism, I take that to mean joe blow atheist going about daily life and getting some degree, even minor, of persecution or harassment.

Clearly, if you're trying to get elected, that's a different story, as no one is going to get elected if they wear their atheism.

Yeah, those poor atheists who do nothing but spew unfounded insults at religious/spiritual people sure have it rough.

I wouldn't describe myself as an athiest, I don't think not believing in God requires a label any more than not believing in dragons or fairies.

When no one (or almost no one) believes in God, your position will be correct.

Currently, the majority does believe in God, so your position is silly.

Not amongst my friends, acquaintances, colleagues and quite probably not in my country but I'd have to check.

Apparently the majority of my country do believe in some kind of higher power.

So, Richard Dawkins can state his point very clearly, everyone has to notice this, and that's why he should better shut up? So that no-one can lose his faith in some sort of a god. So that no-one has to figure out that there is no evidence for religion.

By the way, what makes him a loon, and why does he make his side look bad? Do you have any material to back up your claim? Any quote from The God Delusion for instance?
