I say we stick with the rodent theme and get a venomous rodent like solenodon.

My daughter always had guinea pigs -- they have the least scent of the typical rodents. Very friendly, easy to care for.

Yeah, get some guinea pigs. If there's a food shortage, you can make a meal out of them.

I'm sorry but I find it impossible to believe that snakes eat gerbils and other rodents. They're just too cuddley. I mean the snakes of course.

I've had guinea pigs before, they can grow quite big and can be as noisy as hell when they're hungry

Try a pangolin. Takes care of household pests and it won't bite you.

More seriously, try robo dwarf hamsters. They're like tiny little crackheads. EDIT: Wiki says they're really "Roborovski hamsters," native to Mongolia. I saw them at PetsMart the other day. It was late morning, and they never stopped moving. Ran on their little exercise wheel so fast you couldn't see their legs, when they weren't stumbling and getting thrown backwards. But it never stopped them. It's also fun when three of them try to crowd onto the wheel at once, or when one tries to get on the wheel when another's already got it going at like 500 rpm.

Put a weasel in the box with a gerbil and see which one wins.
