  • It's The Year Of The Herman

2000 years ago those Roman imperialist bastards were taught a lesson in the battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Arminius, leader of the Cherusci, became subsequently (esp. in the 19th century) Herman, liberator of all Germans, useful for all kinds of nationalist propaganda blahblah.

Still, nice battle (though we dunno for sure about many details) as far as battles go. And the 2000 yr thing causes all kinds of related stuff to show up this year (exhibitions, books, documentaries etc.etc.).

To be fair the Roman General in question was incompetent and ignored all the good advise he was given including a warning that it was a trap.

You guys wrecked Western Civilization by 476. You couldn't just allow yourselves to be Romanized, could you?

Romans didn't like beer, so it was a big no-no. OTOH the spread of beer after the fall of Rome has always been one of the key factors in the formation of western civilization - FACT

We made it through WW2, now nothing could possibly scare us.
