    anyone have it?

I know it's not good to go through life worrying about stuff, but this one scares the hell out of me. It's why I've managed to stick with going to the gym this long (I used to quit after a month or two).

Reading this article has scared the hell out of me.

Even my 2 or 3 times a week at the gym are insignificant! My BMI is 22.8, and I'm desperately trying to get that down. Everyone says I look thin, but I still think I'm too fat.

I've avoided getting a medical exam because I'm scared. but I am going to get one soon (in a few weeks). I'm scared of what it might show. I haven't got an exam since I got out of the navy almost 10 years ago.

What I don't get about diabetes is they say you have to eat all these crappy foods with no protein. How can they expect you to work out at the gym 7 days a week and not eat large amounts of protein? I eat almost no sugar whatsoever and avoid carb foods such as potatos religiously. My diet is very high protein and low carb/sugar right now. I don't want to give that up to eat crappy plants that I don't like the taste of. Simply put meat tastes good. I eat my spinach/romaine lettuce salad and that's about it for vegetables for me. I'm trying to keep my weight down, don't want to eat alot of excess calories. Getting 70 to 80g's of protein a day fills up all my calorie needs. Any more and I'll gain weight.

Anyone here have diabetes? How do you manage it? How is your quality of life not being able to eat protein rich foods? I don't mind giving up carbs, but eating all this fibre rich non protein stuff seems yucky. Seems like I'd be on the toilet like 5 or 6 times a day if I ate all that crap! I'm not a rabbit dammit!

what makes you think you have diabetes? do you feel thirsty all the time, need to urinate far more than usual? get your blood sugar tested as soon as and you'll know for sure.

i've got type 1 diabetes, which is controlled by insulin. i can eat (or drink) what i like, as long as i take enough insulin to tackle the sugar. type 1 tends to come on in childhood or adolescence, but you can get it at any age. it's very much related to family history, but it's not clear what triggers the onset of diabetes. type 2 is controlled by tablets and diet (in mild cases by diet alone). type 2 varies greatly as far as diet is concerned. you would need to speak to your doctor, but i don't know where you get the idea that diabetics can't have protein. it's all about carbs and sugar. type 2 tends to happen in older people, people who are overweight and/or otherwise unhealthy.

i don't find it that hard to cope with, because it's always at the back of my mind. i always think, prior to eating, drinking or taking something 'how will this affect my sugar levels and what do i need to do to counteract it'. i've been diabetic since i was 10 so it's second nature to me. obviously, for an adult, it's a big change and it would probably difficult at first to adapt to life as a diabetic.

i wouldn't worry too much about it. get yourself checked out, it's probably nothing, and if not, then it's not that bad.

This is exactly how I deal with my type 1, and the advice is exactly that I'd give too. C0ckney.

Go to the doctor Dis, and stop worrying about it.

Nothing to worry much for, with today's medical knowledge, you can live a perfectly normal life.

You can get diabetes through various ways. My is genetical, and it's at least 50% chance for kids to get it from a parent with the gene. In my generation, it's 75%, my mother's 100%, so I'm not buying the number though.

Don't avoid it. Diabetes is not dangerous if controlled, but if left alone, it can give serious health problems.

Bullcrap. You can eat 100% normal, even eat sweets, but of course, you need to be careful and know your body, how much insulin it needs for the food you're eating and so on. Excersising makes the body need less insulin. Which is good, as insulin is weight increasing. And more weight = more need for insulin =...

I have no problems managing my diabetes. I eat normal, and should you be able to if you get it. As said, the no protein is not true. I have diabetes MODY 3 btw. One of the around 30 types of diabetes not fitting into the diabetes 1/2 system. A little of the marks of one here and two there.

Why would you say this? Diabetes or not, he's never lived a "normal" life, and the odds are he never will. He's whack. Don't get his hopes up.

funny you should ask, today I learned I'm diabetic with gloucoma - sort of. My docs aint too specific and they aint too sure, I'm at 119 on the blood sugar and he tells me 126 is diabetic so he calls it pre-diabetic but he told me he's playing this (or wants me to think) as if I am diabetic and I'm told %50 of pre-diabetics never get diabetes. I asked my Doc about why and he confirmed the obvious - the %50 who dont become diabetic change their lifestyle and start regular exercising and proper diet. I quit smoking last Friday night with Chantix (that stuff works great 4 me) and I quit drinking the Dew last week so I'm on my way.

My eye Doc says I have gloucoma but he calls it "suspect" until he gets evidence of increasing damage. My right eye is fine, my left has serious damage. He said %10 of people get gloucoma in one eye (or the effect hits 1 eye) so thats unusual to begin with.
The damage may have been done early in my life and it aint progressing, but he and I aint gonna wait - he's got me on drops to lower my ocular pressure and he'll take another look in a few months to see if any more damage has been done. I'm optimistic, I'm also optimistic about treatments - now and the future... But I'm convinced about the exercise angle toward diabetes. I've had symptoms for quite a while but they practically disappear when I'm active.

Just eliminate sugar and go back in a couple months.

Dis, try to get exercise and cut sugar and get it tested once in a while but don't get stressed about stuff. Stress isn't good for you.

I have had Type II diabetes for 22 years now and control it with pills and diet. Despite everyone disrespecting sugar here, the problem is carbohydrates. Sugar is a source, but so are bread, rice, potatoes, etc. The key is C0ckney's advice, to remain aware at consumption all the time. Like a sniper moving to position, be aware of everything around you and react when you need to. Check with the doctor regularly, measurements from there will tell you how well you are doing long term. Hang in there.

Uh, let's slow down a little here -- there is no evidence that he's diabetic. Dis read a CNN.com fluff piece and got scared.

Also, DM1 and DM2 are so different as to best be regarded as completly separate diseases.
