Oh yes, I'm a member of the Celtic Malts whisky club, and they have a huge show in San Francisco every year - Whiskys of the World Expo.
I have been to master tasting classes - mostly blind tastings, but haven't had your luck with rare whiskys. That's where I discovered the Jim Beam Black Label.

That's the exact glass I use!

BTW, how long before Ben tells us that Southern Comfort is the world's greatest whiskey, and everyone knows that it should be spelled whiskEy.

I checked Whisky Live for you -- another great international show -- but it looks like they're only in Yankistan for four shows this year: LA, Fort Lauderdale, Maryland, and somewhere else far from you

But they're back in Toronto Oct 2009, and I'll be there. Another shotgun sampling of reviews will come then.

I did mean Ben Kenobi. He argues all the time about things he has no idea about.
Lately, his hockey arguments make my head hurt.

I spent about 50 or 60 posts arguing with him last year. He asserted Trevor Linden was a better player than Jarome Iginla. That argument ended when Trevor Linden said to Iginla in his very last NHL game, and I quote, "You're the best in the game".

Tried Glenlivet once. Urgh, it was atrocious. Not bland, but horribly acid. Could barely finish the glass, and only did because it cost so bloody much.

I'm still a scotch novice. I've had Glenfiddich, Oban, and Macallan in addition to the evil mentioned above. Liked all three.

Asher- you really should try Glenfarclas. You're clearly into the Speysides and it's the one real heavyweight you're missing.

Aberlour is another excellent one, but may be a bit too delicate for your tastes.

It's a blend wich includes some Islay malts. Yeah, I know you don't like those, but the peat is reduced heavily, so it's more a note.

I don't get that at all. The point of buying an Islay malt is for that MASSIVE blast of peat and smoke. If you don't like that, buy a Speyside or Highland malt.

Dalwhinie 15 is good for novices. Most everyone else, too.

If you want to try a scotch single malt that is smokey but doesn't taste simply like a mouthful of peat straight from the bog I would suggest Talisker - it's about the only island malt I can take. Not easy though, better to be at the stage where you are finding the Speyside malts a bit bland before taking the plunge.

As for Irish whisky it seems to be ridiculously overpriced outside this country. Stick to Jameson or Bushmills unless you are here on holiday. Jameson 12 is good but if you like that then the 18 or the distillery reserve are well worth a try.

But I do like them - my favourites are Caol Ila and Laphroaig Quarter Cask (I'm quite comfortable with the std version too) - the reason that I suggested the Black Grouse to Asher is because he's not so fond of them, and a milder version could be an intro.

Mobby, I'll bet that there are several coastal cliffs in you vicinity - could you please pick one of the higher and take a dive from it ?

I know that it will create a disastrous pollution due to the release of vast amount of BS, but most people will probably consider it a price that is acceptable.

why would you drink whiskey when you can drink a good alcoholic beverage?

I think people only drink stuff like that out of tradition or to prove how manly they are. That's the only reason I ever drank whiskey in the past. . Now if I feel the need to prove my manliness I drink tequila. It tastes better to me. But I admit to not drinking a good whiskey...
