Chances are there are 10s of thousands of unreported cases in Mexico and the number of deaths is therefore a very small percentage of the total actually infected.

As I said, this could be a problem in the third world, where the proper supportive care is unavailable, and oppotunistic co-infections run rampant. But, again, this appears to be no worse than any other influenza strain. Deep breaths, everyone. Deep breaths.

                  Eg, low-income Texans?

                      Indeed.

One note of caution though. It isn't the old and weak dieing as in other flu outbreaks. Prolly the reason for the exaggerated concern.

I hate to tell you, but where I live is hardly 3rd World. Just keep being flippant about it, though.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

                            I don't see what's so different?

The issue is lack of reasonable access to medical care (preventative and otherwise). Low-income people in the US are really not much better prepared for this kind of outbreak than people in third-world countries.

In Canada, every citizen can go to clinics and doctors and get treatment early on if they even suspect they may be ill with it and not worry about paying a dime. That can go a long way to having a healthier population.

The majority of the deaths haven't even been confirmed to be from swine flu, nor do we know what other mitigating factors may have been in play, such as bacterial or other viral co-infections, environmental factors (ie, apocalypse-level air-pollution in Mexico City), medical treatment, etc.

Only one of the confirmed cases here in the US was ill enough to be hospitalized, let alone threaten anyone's life.

                              Deep breaths.
