Any advice on bush pruning. I overdid pruning my mom's bush and she is mad at me now. I had read up on it on the web and all, but when I started pruning, I just couldn't seem to make it work to prune out of the window blockage and I basically pruned it to a stump.

Start at the top of the bush, not the base.

    ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

I tried that. But I somehow could not make it work. The whole thing was long and scraggly, when I want it round and small and pretty. When I started cutting at the top it looked even worse, so I just cut it down to the base. I guess I did too much. Oh well.

The only viable solution here is to remove even the last vestiges of the bush and deal with whatever prickly growth pokes up as it comes. I know it's unpleasant to have to deal with, but I'm afraid you don't have a choice. Leaving a few scraps of the bush around is untidy and will be distracting whenever your mom amuses herself by playing around in the area.

That's pretty much what we are down to. She doesn't really play there, but wants it to look nice around the house. If I cut off all the living growth, I'm worried it will die entirely. may already be at that point, really.

I don't think chemicals would work on this dense growth. and wax doesn't really do anything.

I should get some gentler hedge clippers. I think the huge pruning shears make me wack at too thick growth.

You shouldn't cut off ANY of the living growth. You can't worry about aesthetics when health is in danger like this.

In fact, I suggest you stop pruning IMMEDIATELY and see a specialist. He will be able to salvage whatever remains.

She'll be ok as long as it grows back. Hope it does.
