What's really some kind of awesome is Apolyton's website circa 1999 is actually better than it is today! No wonder it's dying.

Apolyton CS is the biggest site about the best strategy game and it's sequels, Civilization

To be more precise: until nov 1999, it used to be much better than it was ever after that... (just kidding)

In 1994, Kodak had a web site with lots of pretty pictures. It was one of the first graphic-intense web sites. I can remember waiting forever for the pictures to load.

Can't find it in the Wayback Machine.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Yes, that's what GeoCities gave you. Colors everywhere, animated GIFs up the ass...

Programmers, even back in the 1990s, coded elegantly simple websites -- text-only -- with basic HTML. They're timeless.

On that link I want to click on my threads and see what I was on about. Iirc the ' does your wife or GF dress you' thread was fun. In fact we should dump the threads we have now and load all those up.

Ah all advantage...those sweet, naive days when companies thought paying 0.10 a unique click was a viable business model.

When combined with unlimited free emails and hosting companies lack security of those days it was possible to complete automate the process of searching the top ten most popular search terms on various engines, creating a "Click Here For FREE Britney Spears/Pokemon/Etc!" webpage, and making the link automated.

Then they made it 'click-throughs' (the client had to click on the link, then click on another specifically all-advantage labelled link). Then they dropped the payout to 0.05. Then they realized just how much money they were losing.

But we sure made a lot of money in those days.
