I talk on the cell phone while driving. Though the calls are usually short.

                    Tragedy in Houston
                    April 19th, 2009

HOUSTON - Police planned to charge a driver suspected of being intoxicated when he lost control of his car while using his cell phone, plunging the vehicle into a rain-filled ditch where five young passengers died, a spokesman said Sunday.

Charges of intoxication manslaughter were being prepared against Chanton Jenkins, 32, Houston police Kese Smith said.

Normally, I put my cell phone out of reach.
I don't make any calls in urban areas, nor curvy or unknown roads.
However, I occasionally make "Hi, I'm on the way, bye" calls on my routine route.
Also, I'd never grab my phone from a trousers pocket or from anywhere but a specific spot before my hand brake.

My phone's usually deep in my jeans' pocket when it rings and I'm driving. I do the delicate "stand up on your heels, maintain pressure on the gas pedal, fish through all the crap in your pockets, find your phone, miss the call before you get it, listen to voicemail left by caller, text back while driving" move.

I think that the phone can actually help me stay awake on interstate driving (I get so bored that I get very sleepy). I don't feel that it harms my driving at all.

But it is not so good for in the city.

And I have sometimes texted at stop lights, which is probably a bad idea.

A hands free would be better in general.

In regard o highway driving, I seem to hit a struggle at 2 hours, then come out of it and can go anyone's guess.

We had a women here pulled over for reckless driving for being on her cellphone, smoking a cigarette and breat feeding a baby while driving.

The interviewed here on a local radio show after and she vowed to do it again.
