  • Prison for couple who attempted grill cremation for son

Here's something else that I don't understand. Why the difference in charges and sentencing, and how in the world can it be called either second-degree murder OR involuntary manslaughter?

DETROIT -- A Detroit couple who admitted killing their 2-year-old son and allegedly tried to cremate his body on a barbecue grill have been sentenced to prison.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Michael Callahan on Thursday sentenced 29-year-old Joseph Miller to 22 to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder and 25-year-old Nickella Reid to 10 to 16 years for involuntary manslaughter.

Miller and Reid pleaded guilty last month to those and other lesser charges.

Police found Deuntay Miller's remains while investigating the 2007 scalding of the couple's 1-year-old son. Prosecutors say the couple continued collected Deuntay's welfare benefits after his death.

Was it a charcoal or gas barbeque?
