And here, I think I'm perfectly justified by feeling a bit irked. "You and your citizens" is maybe half a step above "you and your kind". The only times I've heard "you and your kind", it's always been followed by something nasty and unpleasant.
I have to agree with this. This is a classic racist phrase and it implies bad faith and prejudice on the part of the speaker.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

Those rules are at least somewhat regular, which is more than I can say about French, English, or Welsh orthography.

'sides, it makes sense if you consider what sounds they have to work with.

Exactly. Now, I'm willing to believe that she wasn't intentionally being racist. She just had no idea what she was really saying, and it'll be completely okay, once she grasps that what she said is actually kinda offensive.

Do I think she should lose her seat? Not over this, no. Do I think she's a bad person? Not because of this, no. Do I think this kind of ignorance needs to be corrected? Yes.

            8 tones? Terrifying.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

IIRC the Vietnamese language was first transcribed into the Roman alphabet by Portuguese monks or something, based on the closest approximation of the sounds in their own language at the time they were transcribing. So there's a double layer of the usual foreign-language-pronunciation gap. Unless you're a Portuguese guy from centuries ago, in which case I suppose it'd be quite intuitive.
