...on the treadmill it tells you how many calories you burn. Yesterday I burned 400. But I want to know how this correlates to burning fat.

Exercising builds muscle and burns the calories that you've eaten recently. If you consistently exercise more than you eat, your body starts eating down your fat reserves. IIRC over 9000 calories = 1 pound of body fat.
Of course, if you do anything dumb like try to burn over 9000 calories without replacing them with food all in one day, your body will pretty much just say "F U" and work to sabotage your diet plans. It's probably even pushing it to lose one pound a week, if you want to keep it off for good. But that's as much due to habits as it is your body.
Better than counting calories anyway is to treat them (eating and burning) as two separate things. Just exercise for strength or fitness, and instead of worrying about burning X calories, make your diet better. Eat less fast foods, give up soda, eat more fruits, you should know the drill. Do one thing at a time so you can feel like you're accomplishing something.
If you don't eat breakfast and want to lose weight, start eating breakfast. Even though breakfast is a pretty small meal of the day, it jump starts your metabolism.

It is actually pretty easy to lose 1 lb a week and keep it off. It is much more difficult to lose 2 lbs a week and keep it off, and that is actually the maximum that is still recommneded, only under the care of doctors.
These aren't 1 lb of fat though, that is 1 lb loss... losing fat versus losing other things (like muscle) is a bit more complicated.
