  • Board Games

I'm getting sucked in by collecting and playing board games now.

But I've only got a couple to my name aside from the obvious staples (Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Risk, Settlers of Catan).

I just ordered "Ticket to Ride" as it comes highly recommended also.

What other games are actually good?

Man, there are so many good ones. Puerto Rico, the Rails games, El Grande - to name a few.

(Some of these aren't technically boardgames eg, card games)

          Party Games:
          Apples to apples.
          Cranium
          Bang!
          Werewolf/Mafia

          Strategy games:
Puerto Rico. It's a very nice, well balanced game with a number of different strategies.
          Carcassone
          Power Grid

          Cooperative games:
These are games where people work together to achieve a goal (although sometimes there can be a traitor working against the group). These tend to be more complex and longer than your typical board game.
Pandemic: This one is actually fairly short, and can be played in under an hour.
Battlestar Galactica: Surprising for something based on a license, this one is one of the best cooperative games. It has a number of nice game mechanics and isn't too hard to learn (games tend to take around two and a half hours, though)

Talisman -- but good luck finding one. Game Designers Workshop hasn't made it in years.

                          Good Games:
                          Puerto Rico
                          Diplomacy
Pirates (something or another, is 2-5 players)
                          History of the World
                          Avalon Hill's Civilization
Axis and Allies (the new editions are better than the older editions, the ones like Pacific/etc suck though)
                          Samurai Swords

                          Some people also like
                          Zombies
                          Munchkin
                          /etc

                          I need to try again
                          Carcassone
                          Arcanum Horror
Civilization (Based on the computer game)

I like but is a bit hardcore:
                          Republic of Rome
                          Advanced Squad Leader
                          Third Reich

There are also a lot of card games out there. I find it really easy to play MtG, but difficult to play a lot of the above games.

I have huge numbers of board games, but stopped playing again. Many of them I have never played, or have only palyed once.

I've got a copy of Talisman, but seriously, it's not a real boardgame. It's Chutes and Ladders with dragons.

There was one at the game shop I frequented last year. I didn't pick it up (although I spent a lot on games there) due to the recommendation of other game palyers there. They said it just wasn't that great.
