I'm fairly sure neither of you have the jist of that article ...

US decided to make cooperating pay more than terrorism for large group of Sunnis; then tells (Shiite) Iraqis to keep doing it please. They decide not to, either because the Sunnis are just being terrorists anyway, or because they'd rather screw the Sunnis. We'll see which.

I think this could be a key point in the potential turnaround... and I'm somewhat tempted to take the Sunnis' side right now in part [though not in the terrorist actions part of course].

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who didn't talk. His parents took him to many different doctors, but none of them could find anything wrong with him.
Then, when he was about 10, he picked his plate of spaghetti up off the dinner table, hurling it into the wall and growling, "I can't eat this slop!!"
"You can talk!" his parents exclaimed!
      "Of course I can talk."
"But why didn't you ever say anything before??"
"Well, up till now, everything's been okay."

The payments to the Sunnis were never supposed to continue indefinetly. We were pretty much giving them an incentive to stop and live their lives while integrating into society and then see that their lives were better when not living by the sword. It was inevitable that at some point they would be asked to live like civilized people as a matter of course, and it was inevitable that some of them would be pissed at not getting a handout.

War is tiresome, and just like Northern Ireland when enough Iraqis get to live in peace for a period of time they will recognize that all that their sectarian strife ever did was cause them problems, and will themselves be unwilling to tolerate return to the violent past.

Don't others do this on their pet topics?

DanS: some economy mumbo jumbo when conservative policies seem to be working.
Drake: whenever some guy named Obama screws up
Sloww: when something good happens in Iraq
DaShi: when something bad happens in China
Agathon: when something bad happens in America
            Asher: when Apple screws up

You've got a lot self-professed of moral superiority to be throwing around, if this is going to be your new MO.

U.S. and Iraqi troops arrested the leader of a crucial Awakening Council in Baghdad, setting off a rare spasm of street fighting and raising fresh concerns about the troubled Awakening program.

I should add that the Awakening groups didn't take up arms following the elections (they generally didn't win power), so that's a good sign. But no one should believe that the threat of a reignited civil war is gone.

I was pointing out that there was finally something that made him happy in Iraq. No matter how dubious it might turn out to be.

God forbid if anyone points out real crises or substantial issues that need to be addressed.

Keep this up Rah, and I'm going to get very, very angry and write you a letter telling you how angry I am.

You like it that innocent people were murdered by the state? Klaus Fuchs, one of the key designers of the bomb, was the person who turned over the design to the USSR. Michio Kaku, that physicist that's all over cable tv, holds up a copy of the "design" that Ethel Rosenburg's brother claims he saw on the table, in his classes, at which point his students laugh.
