By the way, Oerdin, the Buick Lucerne gets 26mpg highway.

    17mpg city.

    20mpg combined.

Oh, and that's for the 3.9L model. Not the 4.6L.

The 4.6L your "friend" has gets:
    15mpg city
    22mpg highway
    18mpg combined

The only American car I've ever been even remotely impressed with is the new Ford Edge that one of my co-workers just got. Mind you, I didn't drive it and didn't spend a whole lot of time in it, but the fit, finish, acceleration, etc. all seemed pretty good. On the opposite end, I had the collosal misfortune to rent a Ford Mustang in February when I was in Florida for a few days. Why would anyone buy a piece of **** like that? A ridiculously large V6 engine with terrible acceleration and even worse fuel economy - what's the point, exactly? Plus the ergonomics were the worst I've seen this side of a PT Cruiser.

What are peoples' opinion on used/new for the moment?
I'm nearly 100% converted to buying used... like 2-3 years old with relatively low mileage. You save a bundle, get a car that you can research from a reliability standpoint, and it's not like it's an old beater.

European Ford matches other european brands in quality, so they are an option - though they may not match your cool demand.

Last time I was car hunting, I discovered the Mistubishi Eclipse Spyder. It's a 6-cylinder which is priced like, and has the mileage of a 4-cylinder.

I bought my Miata instead because I had limited garage space. But you say you want legroom, and so:

Don't buy an American car. The companies are all broke and the industry will be closed down completely. Detroit will become a ghost town full of pot-smoking hippies, and the only thing you'll get with GM on it is spare parts off ebay at 5 times the price.

Buy Holden Commodore! They're cheap, they suck, but they ain't going broke! The Conformadore (what we call them) are so prevalent with the poovos here in Oz that you can get a reco motor for $50.

The Commodore SS-VE, probably the best one yet.

that's perhaps the most chauvinist post I've ever made.

oh and sports cars are sold for ridiculous prices here...

I forgot that you're in Israel.

Do you have anything like a "dealers' row" there -- a street lined with different car dealerships. You can just walk down the street and see all kinds of different cars. Get various offers from dealers. Get them bidding against each other. It's a great way to buy a car.

around Tel-aviv and its suburbs there is a bunch of those, with 3-5 dealerships or so. As I've already mentioned, I also have a rather nice ~10-15% discount in a dealership chain because of a buyers' club I am in.

I'd not assume that 10-15% discount is worth much, because (at least in the US) you can usually dicker down the price by at least that much. Check what the actual costs are going to be rather than assuming the discount is automatically the best deal.

I'd guess that "discount" is bull****, because you negotiate anyway. They'll just start higher.

I suppose you could try negotiating first and then, at the very end, pulling out the 10% off thing.
