I don't know what to suggest, it all depends on your usage patterns. For example, I absolutely won't carry two devices with me, so mine has to include phone functionality.

Having used a couple of devices so far, I've concluded that big screen is the killer feature, so I am trying to decide between Touch HD and iPhone. There is still some life in my TyTN, so I might wait a bit. It is not impossible that we're going to see a fall in prices because of the economic crisis. Also, Touch Pro 2 has been announced, which is Touch HD with a keyboard, and I like having a keyboard. Most likely, I'll wait and buy Touch HD when I can find it on the cheap.

It seems it's a bad time to lose a device. I don't know what to buy.
Buying another iPAQ 214 is a bit silly.
Sony e-ink devices are cheaper, but you can't read them at night and they are for books only.
I can't find Nokia's internet tablets for sale anywhere.
HTC Touch HD looks nice, but it's a bit expensive. Nothing I can't handle, but it still costs like 2 netbooks.
Will I really have to buy an iPhone?
Not true on the Sony - you can read them at any time. The latest has a built-in backlight, and others can be frontlit with no problem. Yes, they are for books only, though.

In general, the pocket PC is at least in the short term not in vogue. iPhones and their ilk are much more popular (for obvious reasons) and there's really very little reason to have a pocket PC that's not a phone nowadays; 3.5" screen is plenty for most people, and the iPhone, Google Android devices, or Windows Mobile devices generally do the important functions of a pocket PC; otherwise get a tablet or a netbook, I'd suggest. 3.5" and 4" aren't very different, and if 3.5" is too small, consider a 7" netbook perhaps?

N810 is a very nice device. Two of my friends have it. Very nice but sans phone.

Touch HD is 3.8" I think, and the resolution is 800x480, which is also nicer than 640x480 on the iPaq.

There have been some huge devices announced recently, phones with 4+ inch screens, but in my opinion size of Touch HD (12 cm x 6 cm, I think) is already pushing the limits of pocketability.

In the future I'm expecting better screens on phones (eInk, OLED...) but not larger screens.

That is until folding screens come into mass production and we all start carrying scrolls with us.

Or... another development is mini-projectors. Yep, they're installing them in some devices. You can project picture on the wall. Awsome, if a little impractical.

The govt stole it. They need you to buy more consumer goods.

Does the Nokia N810 have a microphone and speaker like on a phone? Does it work well as a softphone on wifi? I've been deciding whether to use a SIP adapter at home or to go with something more robust like the N810.

I understand that you can install Android on the N810, if you wish. Don't know if all of the features are supported.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
