France stealing Canada

Being an Aussie, not too sure of the details, but heard a news item saying France is trying to extend its territory around several French islands near Canada, in effect stealing Canada's territory.
Sarkozy is friendly with US these days, is this a proxy move in support of US to weaken its rival in North America?

Actually, France beat Mexico. The Mexican insurgency beat the French client state in Mexico, after the U.S. told France that intervention would mean war. The U.S., having just smashed the Confederacy and extremely powerful at this point, wasn't in a mood to take **** from anyone. And France was busy in a war with the Austrian Empire (which it won).

Commonwealth isn't the same as colony.

The fact remains, Canada -- independent or part of the Empire -- has never lost a war.

It also depends how you define "war", but Canada fought in World War 2 while not being part of the British Empire.

France promptly lost in World War 2, FWIW.
