  • To keep or not to keep

Well, my week began swimmingly...on Monday night, as i tried to go to sleep I felt the kind of shooting pain from a tooth I had never felt in my life. This morning I was able to get to a dentist, and got the news that I cracked the tooth and now need a root canal and a cap if I want to save the tooth, or of course, I could have the sucker pulled.

My problem is that my dental insurance doesn't kick in for six months ( I got a new job last months, if anyone is wondering why this would be the case), so the quote I got from the dentist is $1900 for the work, $925 for just the root canal.

Anyone know what the possible consequences of getting a root canal done without capping the tooth for months is? Might I have to get additional root canals?

    INFECTION!!!!!
    Same thing to me.
I had to have two teeth root canaled because the first one had no nerves to let me know when it got infected.
Did not feel it till it spread to the healthy tooth in front.

Ask for a temporary cap till you can afford the permanant one
They have them, don't let them car sales you into not getting a temporary.

    BTW
shop around that sounds a lil expensive to me

You don't work for the city anymore?

And I'd do the root canal.

I will tell you this, a tooth infection can kill you. This isn't something to take lightly.

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

If you can afford it without insurance then do it but other wise pull the mother****er and get a dental replacement after you have insurance. I really feel bad because I've honestly never had dental problems (knock on wood) but my friends who have speak of it as sheer agony.

BTW when I read the thread title I was half hoping you thinking of building a real keep.

Oerdin. You were so close. Most of your post was sound and of good logic; but then, you had to say what you thought. Not only that, you provide a link of definition.

As someone who has had five caps and one pulled, I say cap it. Pulling is a distinctly unpleasant experience, and implants are much more trouble and expense than caps.

That price quote is hideously expensive, but then, you do live in NYC.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

The price did seem kinda high. Even though its NY, I'd definitely get a second opinion, especially since a cap is not required after a root canal (it depends on the damage to the tooth AFAIK).
