Balanitis, an inflammation of the glans penis, has several causes. Some of these, such as anaerobic infection, occur more frequently in uncircumcised men. Lack of aeration and irritation because of smegma and discharge surrounding the glans penis causes inflammation and edema. Adherence of the foreskin to the inflamed and edematous glans penis causes phimosis.



Balanitis xerotica obliterans is a skin condition causing white, atrophic patches on the glans or foreskin. It is much more common among uncircumcised males. Circumcision is believed to reliably reduce the threat of BXO.

Phimosis is a condition where the male foreskin cannot be fully retracted from the head of the penis.
Pathological phimosis has several causes. Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (thought to be the same condition as balanitis xerotica obliterans), is regarded as a common (or even the main) cause of pathological phimosis. Other causes may include: scarring caused by forcible retraction of the foreskin, and balanitis. Phimosis is a risk factor for urinary retention and carcinoma of the penis. Common treatments include steroid creams and circumcision.

Preputioplasty or prepuce plasty, also known as limited dorsal slit with transverse closure, is a plastic surgical operation on the prepuce or foreskin of the penis to widen a narrow non-retractile foreskin which cannot comfortably be drawn back off the head of the penis in erection because of a stenosis which either has not relaxed during childhood and adolescence or has re-narrowed after sexual maturity.

Preputioplasty is a treatment for phimosis in the alternative to circumcision and superincision or dorsal slit.
