        Why do we do circumcisions?

An infant circumcision cost on average $165 for each male infant.

There are in excess of 2,000,000 boys born each year.(according to the CIA factbook)

40% of all males born in the USA is 800,000 circumcisions a year.

        $165 * 800,000 circs/year = $132,000,000 a year!!!!

I got the $165 figure from an Australian website that says the US has 52 states, so take that number for what it's worth.

        ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

That's cheaper than just one round of anti-HIV drugs.

And a damn sight more expensive than a box of condoms. If you're baggin' it, then it makes no difference if you are mutilated or not. WEAR A GODDAMN CONDOM if you want to prevent STDs.

If people actually wore condoms all the time, there wouldn't be any STDs or unwanted pregnancies. Circumcision is a good second line of defense.

Hopefully you plan to spend more than $165 on condoms over your lifetime.

Not necessarily, if you enter into a monogamous relationship early in your life.

The real danger about this "circumcised vs STDs/HIVs" thing, despite there being studies saying it does NOT reduce the risk, is even then it's a small drop in the bucket in the most ideal studies in terms of prevention. But it does become another reason for people to have unprotected sex, "hey, I'm circumcised, I don't need a condom".

And before someone says that's silly, it's absolutely not -- you wouldn't believe the convoluted logic of people who have unprotected sex. All of this hype about circumcision being a weapon against STDs isn't going to help, especially the fact that it is questionable at best.

I am circumsied, I've never felt deprived because of it... but the truth is Asher may be right it may be more trouble than its worth. Some of the complications are downright disturbing.

It does look better but I don't think something as subjective as aesthetics should warrant surgery.
