Why is this particularly newsworthy? Why is it any different than the speeches he gives every day?
The set of questions asked in town halls are broadly different from the ones journalists ask. Typically less process oriented. And you sometimes get focus on pet issues that are obscured by the national media. Which is not to say that this is particularly newsworthy.

      Questions are getting better.
One was on why cost-of-living is not calculated into federal taxes.
Now, one on a looming $105 billion predicted deficit for California in 3 years.

What makes it sound like bull****? I do have to apoligize though. It was a rally in San Fran not LA.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

According to Fox News, her statements were made in the context of preserving families:

"Who in this country would not want to change a policy of kicking in doors in the middle of the night and sending a parent away from their families?" Pelosi told a mostly Hispanic gathering at St. Anthony's Church in San Francisco.

            "It must be stopped....What value system is that? I think it's un-American. I think it's un-American."
            ...
"We think that families are the cornerstone of our society and our nation, and an immigration system should preserve those families, not destroy them," Gutierrez told FOX News Capitol Hill Producer Chad Pergram on Tuesday.
I don't see any mainstream reporting on this. So who knows what really happened?
Edit: There's nothing on her website on this subject.

I'll lean for strictly for the changeyness, but IMO he should have gone whole-hog and done Stewart or Colbert. Then Opie and Anthony or Stern just to really drive the point home.

Leno's a less risky interviewer, has a bigger audience, and has more moderate and conservative viewers. To most effectively sell the budget, it makes sense that the platform would be Leno instead of Stewart/Colbert.

Then a guest appearance on "Heroes."

Of course; I just meant the latter would be more entertaining. OTOH if he's really trying to avoid "preaching to the choir" and just wants a large center-right audience for his sales pitch, going on O'Reilly a second time could do the trick (the first interview hit 6.6 million viewers, which tops even Leno's good nights). But again, mostly I'm just biased toward what'd be most amusing.

Leno's expecting an audience of 10 million tonight. (I hope his concession stand is well stocked. )

Obama White House bars press from press award ceremony

We are not making this up:

Barack Obama was elected commander-in-chief promising to run the most transparent presidential administration in American history.

This achievement and the overall promise of his historic administration caused the National Newspaper Publishers Assn. to name him "Newsmaker of the Year."

The president is to receive the award from the federation of black community newspapers in a White House ceremony this afternoon.

The Obama White House has closed the press award ceremony to the press.

                          From the president's official schedule:

"Later in the afternoon, the President and the First Lady will attend a reception with the National Newspaper Publisher Association in the State Dining Room, where they will be presented the Newsmaker of the Year award. This event is closed press."

Maybe they'll let the newspaper people pass the award through the fence.
