I figure it must be something along those lines. I didn't bother to ask. whole thing happened by email/fax.

Happened to me, one credit company cancelled on me. First it had a £3300 credit limit. Then the next week they cut it to £2300, and the week after that they cancelled it altogether...strange...

I wonder to what extent that's due to the banks needing to reduce their potential liability due to shrinking asset to debt ratios?

I'm trying to figure out if Fannie holds our mortgage, because the program Fannie is rolling out in April looks good for us. The problem right now is that someone at Countrywide told us "yes, Fannie holds your mortgage" but Fannie says "we have no record of holding a mortgage for that address." Lovely.

As for Dirty Martini's situation, there is a federal program I think that allows special refi's for people with 95% - 105% loan-to-value (5% to -5% equity)... maybe that's what you got. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but as far as I can tell, we won't qualify for that b/c we have *too much* equity. Besides, while 5.5% would be an improvement, I'm angling for less than 5%.

In other "well this would be nice if we qualified" news, I finally got around to investigating solar power for our house.

CT has this cool solar lease program. Way, way better than leasing a car, let me put it that way. The guy was explaining it to me (skeptical, thinking of car leases) and I was warming up to it... until he mentioned the income cap to qualify. A tiny violin played somewhere as I realized we're well over the cap. Since the CT solar rebate program ran out of money last fall, there really isn't any point in pursuing solar at this time (and Dan's been telling me to wait a couple of years anyway). Oh well.

Mine recently increased mine to £3,000 after I questioned them about why they thought I was a credit risk and why they were unable to give an honest answer about their decision making processes.

Why would it matter from a practical standpoint if Fannie holds your mortgage?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It's probably just that at this part of the business cycle, they want to reduce their exposure to credit cards. Better for the customer to run up the balance on another card and then default. GEICO has the deepest pockets out there, so it's not a matter of distress.

                    It's a Fannie program, isn't it?

Would GEICO be the bank behind the card, or something else? I assumed they're just the brand, and there's a bank, ie BoA, etc., actually issuing the credit.

Apparently, all the GEICO cardholders are getting their limits dropped drastically.

Good point. Google reveals that GEICO Mastercard is run by Merrick Bank. I don't know anything about them.

That statement is unclear, actually; it says they are reducing all credit limits on accounts that are over 500, but not that they are actually reducing it to 500 (necessarily). Reading the comments, that is accurate (some are having them reduced but not to 500).

It's intriguing that they (Geico) sends out the letter, though. On credit cards who were actually issued by another bank, this is not always the case in my experience; often the issuing bank does the communication (for example, Citibank on my long-cancelled Netscape branded credit card back in the day).

Yes, Netscape issued credit cards at one point. Really.

I don't use my credit cards.

They've not only stopped sending bills say that I have 0 balance, but they've also stopped sending me those checks, which I never knew what they were for anyway.

                              Credit is for suckers.

It's actually very clear. If your available credit (i.e., your limit minus your balance) is above $500, your limit is getting cut.
