Also will we have by 2050 the technology to build a interstellar space ship? (note: I'm talking about tech not political will, I think we have probably had the tech to send a manned mission to Mars since the 1980's)

SMAC depicts a world torn apart more by factionalism and war then by economic blight, one in which the political will for expansion exists and most importantly resources and money are still available for it. I think the real situation will be one in which resources are tighter but factionalism and war are scarcer as well.

It will all come down to resource (primarily fossil fuel) depletion, people may agree or disagree with how Capitalism distributes resources but it is unlikely to be abandoned if resources are still available. An all out effort will eventually be made to renewable resources at some point in the future, if it dose not succeed then theirs no money for StarShips or most of modern warfare either.

It's a normal economical down-cycle, triggered by loose loan policy in the US. The last one was in 2001; we were due for another one. It will be followed by a normal economical up-cycle, unless THE ONE manages to turn himself into a FDR by loan-based spending.

To say that "current economic woes" will cause global anarchy and extinction is beyond hyperbole.
