  • The other integration conventions (midpoint or right-hand side) are a little more complicated, but still exactly as you would suspect.

Yeah, you get to know numerical methods pretty well doing graduate work in physics.

      • It's kind of humbling how little I know about the basics of real math. I think JM might be right in suggesting we teach it in high schools.

        • I'll never forget the postdoc who complained to me that he was numerically solving sets of 7 coupled equations at some millions of different points and that it was taking forever (using an amoeba method). I looked at his problem, and 5 of the 7 equations were linear...

          • At least pseudo-linear...He was restricted in parameter space so it was a little more complicated than inverting a matrix....but still.

            • Also, on the topic: Jim Cramer is an idiot, and so is anybody else who claims that trying to beat the market by stock-picking is a worthwhile enterprise.

              • Also, anyone who thinks Cramer saw the financial crisis coming and consciously misled the public about it is also an idiot.

                    This is true.

Self-delusion is a powerful force, though. Both Stewart and Cramer both probably think Cramer is smarter than he is.

                    • I doubt Stewart does. He was just pretending to think so in order to have a reason to denounce Cramer and CNBC.

Let's be honest, Cramer is an entertainer, and by using things like sound effects to pick stocks, he basically acknowledges it.

I remember reading a while back that there's an entire industry based off of shorting Jim Cramer's recommendations.

People think Stewart is brave and smart for engaging in base demagoguery, as well. What are you going to do?
