  • We Need To Remember These Days

Assuming we come out of all this, these are historic times.
The worst economy since the Great Depression. Jobs being cut and home foreclosures staggering.
Terrorists willing to do anything to punish anyone they don't see in the mirror.
Iran and North Korea, playing their nuke talk game.
The first Black president in the U.S.

Someday, your grandchildren will study about these times. How does that make you feel?
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

Oh yes, in the great pizzaria of time we all get a slice of history and ours has an unexpected anchovy. :bleh:

Well, unexpected by most. I'm sitting in paradise on 30 sacks of rice a season.

We live in interesting times. Not as interesting as some other times, thankfully.

I'll probably remember it vaguely and pretty fondly, actually, because I'm still fairly young, mostly healthy, and happy.

The saying, I believe, is that a recession is when your neighbor loses his job and a depression is when you lose yours. So far, for me, this is but a recession. I still have a good job, as does the wife, and we're doing great. So, empathy for those who are not so fortunate aside, life is good.

Troubling, but I imagine we'll survive one way or another.

Terrorists willing to do anything to punish anyone they don't see in the mirror.
Willing, but not really able. At least, not on the scale they'd like. They've spent the last few years calling out for their Muslim brethren to rise up and blow themselves into confetti for unsanitary weirdos hiding in caves from our Predator drones. Not surprisingly, the Muslim world doesn't seem to have paid much attention.

Iran and North Korea, playing their nuke talk game.
If Iran ever gets nukes, there will be a short, violent, and futile scuffle with Israel. No more Iran, possibly no more Israel, and I'll lose little sleep over either. Certainly they're not mad enough to pick a fight with us. North Korea is somewhat worrisome, but at least the only people in range of their missiles (assuming they don't get another limp Taepodong) are the hippie freaks in Washington and Sarah Palin's moose death squads.

The first Black president in the U.S.
JFK was the first Catholic president. My generation remembers him primarily for fooling around and getting shot in the head. At least I do. Oh, and all that crazy crap with Cuba. Seriously, though, in a few years the idea of a black guy in office will be so commonplace that we'll remember the first guy to do it largely as a historical curiosity.

Someday, your grandchildren will study about these times. How does that make you feel?
Honestly, the times are less historic than they seem. The War on Terror (TM) is pretty lame compared to the decades we spent under the shadow of nuclear Armageddon. I guess the global warming fuss could be something, but if current projections are correct, our grandchildren will be too busy hunting feral dogs and pigeons in the ruins of our cities to be studying anything. Of the things you cited, the economic downturn is most likely to merit a big entry in the history books.
