Well the question is whether those really were the same courses and the same surrounding. Someone who knows the college well should answer on that.

Often there are differences even between courses offered by faculties of the exact same institution. For instance, you could have significantly easier courses for people from different schools and study directions, even though they're named the same.

I just felt this point was somehow lost in the middle of the argument, and not reiterated enough.

You could have watched the clip. He seemed to make it clear they were the same courses with the same teachers.

Why can't Ann Coulter meet a serial killer?

I have watched the clip, gramps. Taking "just as many classes as she did in the arts college" is not obviously the same as "the same classes with the same teachers".
Maybe you should have watched it better.

The idea that he was offered the exact same education for 800 bucks, that she paid 10,000 for, is a bit of a stretch, in my view. Alas, I don't know what procedures were in place when Olbermann went to college, which is why I hope someone with upclose knowledge can clear that up.

In any case, Coulter has clearly won, because having Olbermann say that he took classes in the Arts and Sciences school too, is a defacto admission in his own words, that the Ag school is less worthy.

Watching Olbermann I had a feeling that he was creatively diverting attention to issues which dilute the difference between the different colleges.

The fact you were left with the impression that he took the same exact courses (while he never explicitly said that) is intentional. I think it is very possible he took all sorts of classes in the arts college, but the clip is insinuating he took the same stuff, which I suspect is likely untrue.

It was very odd how he stated that now (his own accentuation) the acceptance rate to both collages are the same, while clearly Coulter's claim pretains to 30 years ago.

So he lost on several counts
            - stooping to her level and actually getting into the argument
            - fetching his diploma like a ****
            - admitting that courses in the arts and sciences school are more worthy

Also, what the **** is a "communications" degree doing in an agriculture / biology college?

Serious liberal arts are studied in the arts and sciences college.

The saddest thing about the whole Coulter/Olby feud is that anyone would actually feel the need to defend their Ivy League credentials (especially if they graduated from Cornell). The Ivy League is severely overrated and its graduates are generally better at being pompous douches than productive members of society.

I read somewhere that this was true, but not in the way people think. Apparently, being accepted to an Ivy is a good predictor of future success, but you don't have to attend one. Those who turned down an Ivy and went elsewhere turned out to do as well as those who accepted. The thesis is that the Ivies are good at predicting future success, but the quality of education they actually provide is no different.

I'm glad I grew up in a country where you could go to any university you liked.

Really? There were no admissions criteria? I'm glad I'm not going to university in your country.

In my day you had to pass what was called "Sixth Form Certificate" at high school. Before that it was an exam called "University Entrance". We had national high school examinations, and so nothing like the SAT. Plus there were only seven universities in the entire country.

Apart from law (which is an undergrad degree in NZ) and a couple of other subjects with high demand, you could enrol for pretty much any degree program you liked. The attrition rate at the end of first year was significant though.

This is what happens when you have tertiary education in a relatively egalitarian society. There isn't any competitive consumption and standards are fairly high. The only reasons to choose one college over another were specialist programs or you wanted to be with friends or get away from parents. Hence, Otago University in Dunedin is the wildest campus in the country as it is the furthest away from most people's parents.

I don't think it is like this any more. It's a shame really, because New Zealand once had a really excellent university system for such a small country. The authorities have also banned a lot of fun. In my last year the government built a police station with gaol cells in it next to our student pub, which killed off a lot of the fun, and the authorities banned a lot of the drinking games and the bike pub crawl.

It's kind of sad really. Tertiary education has been in crisis for over a decade due to poor government policy. I would rather not work in a NZ university, which is a shame because I'd really like to go back there to live.
