Hm, Cuba could turn into something like Haiti. A new govt. could get rid of the two real achievements of Socialist Cuba, medical service and alphabetization/schooling, while the economic improvement goes mainly to crime industry: Cuba could very likely turn into a Caribbean Tijuana/Ciudad Juarez, in complete grip of narcos. There are so many dangers to Cuba, Socialist dinosaurs are one, but not the only nor the worst one, IMO.

So your contention is that the average Cuban was content under Fidel?
If so, what's with the human wave of them trying to get here, health care system not withstanding?

No, I'm not saying that. But I say that it could be worse. And you have waves from most Central America, not just Cuba, whatever form of government they have.
As a matter of fact, we'll never know the real economic effects of Cuban socialist regime because of the huge external factor of US embargo (which is no valuation of whether it is fair, necessary or whateer; I'm just describing its huge effect).

Yes, if Cuba were a democracy like Mexico, clearly none of them would try to make it across.

The Mexican government doesn't punish its citizens for trying to leave. Cuba does.

            See I can too.

Besides that, Mexico is too busy trying not to be killed by the drug cartel. Hell, police and officials are leaving, too. You didn't hear me say Mexico was some lost paradise.

And you never heard me claim that Cuba was some lost socialist paradise. I only said that it could degrade more, into a narco-ridden state given the general instability of the region, and that some traits (edu, medi) are much above the Carribbean/Central American average.
