  • My Solution to Jolt the Economy

Please Change the title to "My Solution to Jolt the Economy" before Tehban sees it please. Thank you.

I was thinking about parallels between the great depression and the one we are in now because said "Doing a direct comparision is still silly" in another thread. And, since I take it upon myself to do silly things I did so. And, I then started thinking about prohibition and the role that it may have played in revitalizing the economy.

Prohibition was eradicated in Dec., 1933. Then I thought, what do millions of Americans use now that should be legalized and could create a whole new economy?

    My solution:

Legalize It! Weed that is. Uh, Marijuana.

I'm not a pothead, nor would I become one, but I know a lot of people who would or already are.

How much of an impact do feel that the creation of such an industry would have on the economy? While you may see alcohol consumption drop the rewards would be more than made up for in the snack food industries.

For the love the country, we most do it.

I'm a genious and economic revolutionary! You can thank me later.

Too late. Personally I thought the OP would read in its entirety, "Monkeys!"

        Bah!

The industry is nowhere near the scale it could be.

No, no. He wants to tax the industry to make money from it instead of spending money trying to stop it.

Didn't even think of that approach, money savings!

I was just thinking you'd need farmers, that would spur Deere sales and Monsanto and the like to start engineering better strains.

It would revitalize the cigarette industry which will turn to rolling and distributing weed cigs. Which in turn will spur supply chain companies, at least a little.

It would encourage consumer spending not only on the product but on complementary products like potato chips and glass pipes.

              etc. etc.

And now, no more wasteful spending on trying to stop pot heads from falling of the couch!

It doesn't matter. The amount of money circulating in the economy would be pretty much the same.

Actually part of the profits from drug sales would go to tax coffers and that could be spent... however teh govt would spend it, as opposed to sitting in foreign bank accounts owned by drug cartels.

I totally disagree. The velocity of money within an industry is totally stiffled by laws banning that industry. Also, how much more money will be able to be invested into the industry if it was legal. Creation of money comes from the lending of it, which can't happen where weed is concerned.

They already have very good product. They even have weed that smells like blueberries.

I doubt it. People like to roll their own or load up a bong.

Yea, but people are going to eat less healthy food.

Well, we won't know about that until we give them the option.

That's not true with black markets. There are a lot of people who depend on pot being illegal to make money. They make a lot more money selling drugs than they otherwise would. Also the law enforcement is good for the economy. That's a lot of paychecks that people wouldn't otherwise get.

People are very satisfied with the **** that's out there. There are no gains to be made trying to improve quality.

The amount circulating to the Government matters if we really do want to lower the deficit. Price per unit would probably go down when any competition can't be murdered or turned in. The number of users would probably go up (many would occasionally if it wasn't illegal and prohibited if employed). Overall demand would rise and domestic production could take advantage of decent land. Sounds Win-Win-Win-Win to me (users, farmers, government, police).
