  • Vacation!

I am boarding the plane now, on a connecting flight through Atlanta now then it's off to Hawaii for 11 days

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do there? I have a few days planned out but most of my time there is wide open (default beach).

      Which island(s)?

I was on the big island recently... the obvious thing there is to go to Volcanoes National Park (if conditions permit). The West side of the island is the built up/resorty area with nice beaches. The East side is much less built up, can be a little seedy in spots, and you will have trouble finding beaches. And it gets more rain.

Oahu & Maui was many moons ago when I was but a bratty teen w/parents. Waikiki beach is nice but crowded (duh). Maui was, at least then, a little less so. I remember a cool park we went to that gets something like the 2nd most rainfall/year on earth.

      That's all I got.

Can't help with Hawaii, as I've never been there. Now, when you decide to take a vacation to eastern Iowa, let me know as there are plenty of ideas I can offer you.

        Like for example you can . . . well . . . ah . . . .

        hmmm . . . .

        never mind.

I am going to spend most of the time on Oahu with a couple days on Maui for some outdoors stuff (mountain biking, ziplines, hiking, etc.).

I am at Salt Lake City now, the mountains from the airport are stunning, i haven't seen the Rockies in winter for over two decades.

Sounds awesome. Tourism is way down, so you should be treated well. I've never been there, so we expect a full report. Enjoy.

I am not exactly sure, one of the people I am meeting there set it up but if I understand it correctly it is a mile or so of ziplines and other ropes course type stuff up in the tropical forest canopy. We let everyone pick sometimg and this was her's, mine was snorkling in huana (sp?) bay.

If you've ever had rapelling traing, ziplines is close. The line slopes are less steep, and the atmosphere is much friendlier without the drill sergeants, but the process is similar.

This is my rifle, this is my gun. One is for killing, the other is for fun. Been there, don't miss it.

Oahu - If you surf, don't miss the North Shore. Obvious, but moving is the USS Arizona memorial. Swim with dolphins.

Maui - Great night life. Sunrise mountain biking on Haleakala crater. Snorkeling at Molokini. Taking the ferry over to Lanai - old Hawaii from the 40s.

IMHO, Ala Moana Beach on Oahu -- just across the Ali Wei Channel from Waikiki -- is a far superior beach to Waikiki. Ala Moana has hot local babes, while Waikiki is invested with fat, middle-aged people from Kansas. But the evening shows at the Waikiki hotels are fun, and there can be lots of tourist girls looking for romance.

Pearl Harbor. The navy cruise is the only one that'll take you our to the Arizona Memorial. It's a very moving experience.

On a drive around the island: Go over the Pali and stop at the top. The cliffs are awesome, as are the winds sometimes. There's been instances were suicides have jumped off the top of the Pali only to be blow back to safety. Once you're down on the windward side of the island, hand a left onto Kamehameha Highway. It'll take you around the main part of the island, including Waimea Bay. Once past there, you'll get to Halaieva [sp?] Circle, which will aim you back to Honolulu -- and the road will take you through pineapple fields. You can take pictures, but don't pick any or it's a BIG fine.

Ala Moana Center is a great place to girl watch. When I was there, there were a few modelling schools nearby.

I came through SLC last year and was wowwed by the same thing!
