  • Venezuela: Voters Repeal Presidential Term Limits

    Oh noes, a dictatorship!

The first official announcement by the national Electoral Court stated
    94.2% of votes counted
    Yes vote 54.36% (6,003,594 votes)
    No vote 45.63% (5,050,082 votes)

    Cue Oerdin frothing at mouth.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

      It's ok, because he's a leftist.

It's OK because its common for countries to not have term limits on leadership. Britain doesn't, for example. Similarly, it would have been fine if the Venezuelans were doing the opposite.

There's nothing sacrosanct about term limits. They exist for practical reasons. Some nations may feel they need them, due to their circumstances, others might not. It's really an internal matter.

Similarly, if the US congress amended the constitution to allow Arnold Schwarzenegger to run for President, that would be fine as well. That's because it isn't a partisan issue.

Yes, I agree. Looking at it from that big picture point-of-view ignoring all the details, that makes perfect sense. I'm just grateful that the world is so simple. But it makes you wonder how so many people screw it up. You tell 'em Aggie!

And I guess you will shortly produce these "details", by anal extraction, as is your wont?

Do you ever notice how all of his changes increase his own personal power? It just goes to show any country can slip closer and closer to dictatorship.

I'm just surprised that it could be done with a simple majority.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Did you ever notice that he has to get public consent for his changes, and that if he wants to stay president forever, he'll have to get people to keep voting for him forever?

Oh, you didn't notice this? No wonder you've been posting rubbish.

IIRC people voted for the constitution that allows it to be done with a simple majority.

At some point, if you believe in democracy, a simple majority has to be enough.

Oh, and someone call me when Chavez stages an internationally condemned anti-semitic attack on a synagogue to blacken the name of his electoral opponents, because that's what happened to him in this campaign.
