I'd like to report that I just successfully took a ****. There was no one else in the bathroom, the first stall I got to was relatively clean, and there was no apparent constipation or diarrhea during the execution of the process.

Actually, most e. coli is entirely harmless. It gets blamed for a lot it's not responsible for. Human e. coli is not responsible for food poisoning; it's chicken or whatnot e. coli that is.

Going #2, shigella is the main reason to wash. Shigella is passed in - yes - tiny pieces of ****, and very common; most restaurant food poisoning (mild) comes from it.

Sorry, but E. coli is not harmless despite the fact that it is ubiquitous. In fact, from DNA sequence analysis it's now clear that Shigella is in fact E. coli that is simply carrying specific plasmids that encode a specific cluster of virulence factors. The species name has remained in place for historical reasons. Other E. coli isolates carry other plasmids and other virulence factors. Worldwide, the incidence of deaths from E. coli caused diseases (mostly diarrhea) is in the millions.

BTW Shigellosis is a very serious disease. It is not mild, and it is not the cause of restaurant food poisoning.

Back on topic. I'm a cellular microbiologist, so I wash my hands with soap and water sometimes 20 times a day including after urinating (at work). At home its usually a quick rinse with water.
