    • Obama is the greatest American ever! In fact, all other Americans have lost American citizenship because they could never be as American as Obama.

        • At least Obama's appointees have paid their back taxes (and so did McCain). Palin still hasn't.

          • Obama's appointees didn't have any legal basis to claim they didn't owe those back taxes. Palin did.

If the IRS audits Palin (like they did to Geithner), then you might have something.

            • Yes, they hired an attorney to write them a bull**** letter absolving her. Quite the ironclad defense. Did you even bother reading that article?

Several tax experts said they believe Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is required to pay federal taxes on $25,000 in reimbursements from the state of Alaska for her children's travel expenses.

              [...]

While several tax experts have raised serious questions about whether the payments to Gov. Palin are taxable income, they said the case was clearer cut for treating the reimbursements for the children's expenses as taxable income. "The kids are a slam dunk problem," said Robert Spierer, a partner with the accounting firm Perelson Weiner LLP in New York City. "The husband you could make an argument that he had to be there because it was required for spouses to be there."

But not the children, he said. "I don't think I would ever claim that on my clients' returns. I can't think of a real strong argument for it."

              [...]

Gov. Palin also accepted $17,000 in per-diem meal payments for nights spent at her home in Wasilla, 40 miles from the governor's office she used in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. Gov. Palin often used that office rather than traveling to the state capital of Juneau, more than 800 miles away. Several tax experts have argued this should be counted as taxable income.

              [...]

Because the answer to at least one and possibly more of those questions is no, "The Palins should have reported the $43,000 in family travel allowances received in 2007 as income," Mr. Camp wrote in an analysis.

Sounds pretty unequivocal. The only defense in the article seems to be that Palin hired crappy accountants to prep her taxes and that the income wasn't on her W-2. Hey, where have I heard that before?

Daschle paid his back taxes without complaint, without an audit, without relying on a bull**** legal defense, and with interest. Palin, not so much. Republican integrity.

              • Where did I say anything about an ironclad defense? I said Palin had a legal argument, unlike Geithner who failed to pay his 2001 and 2002 taxes even after he was audited and forced to pay back taxes for 2003 and 2004. I'm not saying Palin is innocent or has a strong case (how the hell would I know?), but her back tax problems are nowhere near as blatant as Geithner's. Or Daschle's, for that matter, who pretended he didn't know he had to report consulting income for income tax purposes.

                • That's actually a very interesting question... I'd say the children count if the husband counts. I'm not sure either one does, frankly, but I can see the argument; heck, take them with or pay for a babysitter, she has to do one or the other, right? (Though I guess the oldest child is old enough to watch the others...)

I'm not saying I know a lick about tax law, but reasonable wise, I don't have a problem with kids being brought along on the dime.

                  • The only defense in that article appears to be that H&R Block blows. Would it really have been better if Geithner or Daschle got one of those letters signed by some lawyer on their payroll? Then they could get out of paying their taxes too.

It is pretty interesting, actually. How does this work for the President? I assume Michelle Obama might be covered on trips with Barack if she's acting in her capacity as First Lady, but what about Sasha and Malia?

Every accountant cited in NGR's article, besides the one working with the McCain campaign, said that the law was clear. Even the one sympathetic guy said that under the letter of the law, it's her legal obligation. There's also the per diem income that looks taxable.

So let's assume H&R Block lead her astray. She should still pay her taxes. Like Geithner and Daschle did after they found out their accountants ****ed up.

Does that excuse the idiocy of his vetting team? I'm genuinely curious because I would have sworn Obama won and this stream of shameful choices have been to staff the Obama cabinet and not McCain's.

                          • As I was saying, given that the two principals in the Republican ticket had tax issues - and one of them is still dodging her obligations, I doubt that Obama's slate is so bad in comparison to the probable alternatives.

                            • I'm sorry Ramo. I wasn't aware that excusing bad behavior by pointing to the percieved or real bad behavior of others was actually a valid ethical defense or that it made such things all right.

                              • I don't believe that I "excused" anyone. Geithner and Daschle ****ed up, and paid their back taxes with interest. It looks like some folks are excusing Palin.
