Prosecutor: Grand Jury Indicts Baltimore Mayor

BALTIMORE -- Maryland's state prosecutor says a grand jury has indicted Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon on 12 counts, including perjury, theft and misconduct in office.

The prosecutor's office announced the indictment on its Web site on the final day of a four-month grand jury session in which a City Council member and a prominent developer who once dated the mayor were indicted on public corruption charges.

Dixon's attorneys say they and the mayor will make statements later this afternoon.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I actually hadn't heard anything about this until 5 minutes ago. I was sort of out of the loop for a couple of weeks over Christmas.

Sheila Dixon is and always has been a piece of trash. I think the worst thing O'Malley did during his career (both as Mayor and now as Governor) was to leave with her in a position to assume the Mayoralty.

I wonder how much she paid O'Malley for the position?

Honestly, O'Malley doesn't strike me as the type. He bows to political expediency as much as anybody, but I haven't heard any suggestions that he's corrupt in that sense (and would be quite surprised to find out that he was).

As I recall, the number of murders went up during his time in office. IMO, that's usually a sign of incompetence or corruption.

Murders in Baltimore are a force of nature. Trying to do something about them is like trying to stop a hurricane.

By the way, from what I recall the numbers were actually pretty much flat through his tenure

Even if so, its neighbor 40 miles south was experiencing rapid declines in murder during this period.

Murder is not very well understood, it's true. But I often ask myself whether the uniform decrease in murders under the incorruptible Mayor Williams is a coincidence.

In any event, at least you don't have the Hip Hop Mayor.
