  • Telephone/Internet access in France

My daughter's going to be studying in France. Both phone and Web prices seem pretty substantial in price over there. But she wants to stay in touch, which is great.

So I'm thinking: Doesn't it make sense to just pay for the Internet service and do the Skype thing? That way she'd have both. Of course, she wouldn't have a mobile... Can one make a 6-month arrangement for hi-speed Web access into uni housing? Seems like the universities over there have dropped out of the arms race when it comes to connectivity.

Is there anyone on Poly that can shed some factual light on this?

Skype is good for those long distance calls. I would recommend some cheap mobile phone subscription in France though. Having a phone is really handy for utility calls in particular!

By the way, what are you complaining about! Internet is very cheap in France. Maybe not for you, but it definately is for Belgians

Wait ! A university housing without i-net-access ?! In france ? Gosh ! 5 years ago, the one i used to live in, got a 100MBit connection (albeit with a volume limit of 1GByte/month - which i promptly exceeded and got banned ). The funny thing is: They laid down tons of cable spanning four stories, connecting about 65 people. Put up rails for the cables along the ceilings and everything. Very expensive, and due to being done in a crappy way (hey - it´s just for students !), quite ugly, too. Today, they´d just put a WLAN-router or two on each level and that would be it (of course they´d have to put them in locked boxes, but they did the same with the hubs for the cables).
