  • I think I like Jazz

I never listened to the stuff, but recently I seem to have acquired a taste.

What would my fellow polytubbies recomend?

What do you like? Piano, Saxophone, Big Band, Guitar, Vocal, Other?

Personally, I really like Johnny Griffin (Saxophone).

              - Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane

              - Miles Davis, Kind of Blue

              - Miles Davis, In a Silent Way

              - Duke Ellington, Money Jungle (with Charlie Mingus and Max Roach)

              - John Coltrane, A Love Supreme

              - Sony Rollins, Saxophone Colossus

              - Billie Holliday, Songs for Distingué Lovers

WARNING! Proceed with caution, Hera. There's a wise old saying, goes something like this:

                  You're evil

I would add Chet Baker to the list, though I usually prefer the saxophone, a most magical instrument.

Trust me, liking jazz on Poly is a lonely calling.

Anyway, Nostromo's list is a good one. Here are mine, which will repeat a couple of his:

12 classic jazz CDs by 12 different artists that can get anyone started:

                    Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus
                    Dexter Gordon, Go
                    Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um
                    Thelonius Monk, Monk's Dream
                    John Coltrane, Blue Train
                    Duke Ellington, Ellington at Newport
                    Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin'
                    Cannonball Adderly, Somethin' Else
The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Time Out
Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto, Getz/Gilberto
Horace Silver, Songs for My Father
Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Sonny Stitt, Sonny Side Up

4 more to add if you like classic (pre-WWII) jazz:

Louis Armstrong, Hot Fives and Sevens
                    Duke Ellington, The Blanton-Webster Band
Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, Souvenirs
Benny Goodman, Live at Carnegie Hall

2 to add if you like traditional jazz vocals:

Ella Fitzgerald, Ella In Rome: The Birthday Concert
                    Billie Holiday, Satin Lady

Finally, while my tastes run to older jazz, here are 5 I've really liked from the last decade or so:

                    Cassandra Wilson, Traveling Miles
Wynton Marsalis, Live at the House of Tribes
                    The Benny Green Trio, Testifyin'
                    Esperanza Spalding, Esperanza
                    Jenny Scheinman, Jenny Scheinman
