I could say Keanu Reeves sucks but that wouldn't really be a "spoiler" would it?
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow
"I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain
I haven't seen it (or the original), but here's my guess at the plot/ending based on what I've seen in the trailers --
Super cool alien dude comes to earth. Sees how man is destroying it with pollution/war/childhood obesity. Kills everybody with his disintigratobeams. Finally sees small child picking up litter and generally being kind to others. Sheds single glittering tear and says "Be excellent to each other". Teleports back to home planet in a phone booth. Wyld Stallions.
The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.
Four members of the "Movie Mob" gave it: 1 out of 5; 2 out of 5; 3 out of 5 and 4 out of 5. Two other reviewers said "Skip it."
The original was a cri du coeur for togetherness in the face of the outbreak of the Cold War. This new version appears to be an expose that man-made climate change is bad.
First one was really great if you could get past the fact that an interstellar alien was wandering the streets of Washington DC and the army didn't close the streets and go on a house-to-house search. Why does Keanu Reeves decide to let the earth off this time? It's no spoiler to note the earth is saved, would be a real bummer ending to kill everyone.
No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai
"I played it [Civilization] for three months and then realised I hadn't done any work. In the end, I had to delete all the saved files and smash the CD." Iain Banks, author
On the other hand, it'd be a cool scene if Kenau really did cause the Earth to stand still, and forward momentum caused all of humanity to be hurled off into space.
The movie attempts to combine two genres, the chase and the disaster. It does the chase very well, and it is tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The disaster looks cool, which all disaster movies should do, but it causes you to lift your suspension of disbelief.
After a couple of days reflection, a lot of the premise falls flat. The aliens are going to destroy humanity to stop the human caused mass extinction? Well, where the **** where they when that asteroid crashed into the Gulf of Mexico or any of the earlier ones? They should have stuck with the original premise.
Keanu's poor acting works for him here, as he can pull off a non-human pretty easily.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Good catch.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
It's also reflective of a certain anti human philosophy which sees humanity as something separate from nature and the planet. We are natural. We are the product of nature and thus all our products are products of nature. We are not separate from Earth, but part of it. The biosphere is every bit as much of Earth as the lithosphere or the core or the atmosphere.
Spoiler:
My impression from the ending of the film is that humanity has lost all of its technology. Far from saving the human race and forcing us to live more peaceful lives, it would cause us to descend it the worst barbarism. Without out oil and electrical based society, farming would lose massive productivity.
Within a short time, the population of the planet would fall by two thirds, after people had eaten everything that could possibly be eaten. Furthermore, there would be massive wars over what fertile land was left.
Ironically, the most ravenous group of humans, the Americans, would also be the ones most set to survive this global catastrophe, as we are blessed with abundant arable land and water (although much of our Western states would lose their crop growing ability without the ability to pull water up from the Ogalala Aquifer).
To keep ourselves warm, we would resort to coal and wood burning, which would strip the northern forests bare in no time. Far from saving the environment, the alien imposed solution would lead to a far greater environmental devastation.
