  • Am I missing something with The Sarah Silverman Show?

My friends and I are almost always on the same wavelength when it comes to humor, so I'm surprised that almost to a man, we're out of synch on this one.

I've watched most episodes of SSS, and I just don't think it's very good. And it's not that I dislike Silverman, I have in the past. I just feel the show tries too hard at times and her character is so dislikeable as to be a turn-off.

That isn't to say I haven't laughed at some of the more inspired moments, like the black face episode and the bit with the two gay guys getting super-high and trying to get home.

So who wants to advocate for it to me? Make the case.

Srah Silverman is cool because she's such a pottymouth for a decent-looking woman. Her standup is not bad. She's unpredictable in interviews, which is fun.

But you are right: her show on Comedy Network is an abomination, and has shown no signs of improvement. Bad writing, bad casting, poor acting, and very little actual humor.

    IMHO.

This is quite correct, they are the saving grace of the show.

I also liked the one where Posehn's character was making youtube videos with special effects.

I'm with both of you on the show. From the few episodes I've watched, it seems like they started with "throw Sarah out there and just let her be Sarah," which is fine for standup and interviews, but doesn't seem to be enough to carry a sitcom.

I feel the same way, but some people really like that.

I run into similar with Bob Sagat's standup (I love it, others find it tries too hard to be dirty and Sagat is dislikable)

See, I think Saget is likeable. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.

I can like a show where I dislike the characters, if it's done right. Seinfeld, for instance. Who would like any of those people? But it was still a good show.

I haven't watched it much, but I really liked the episode where they were having the ongoing fight about Tab.

Yes, I remember that one, too

If racism and homophobia were funny, there'd might be some comedy in the show. Silverman has the potential to be a great comedian, but she perpetually opts for repugnant grossness rather than comedy.

How is it homophobic? The gay characters are the best people in the show.

Because they only exist to be gay. It's as if someone said, "Hey, if we have gay characters on the show, then we can do a never-ending stream of gay jokes."

I don't think that's accurate. Most episodes I've seen, their being gay wasn't dwelt upon as an issue. Like the TAB episode mentioned above--that could have been a fight between a straight couple, it wasn't especially "gay."

They're actually portrayed as the most normal people on the show...

You may be right. I don't watch the show much, so I bow to your superior expertise.

But IMHO, Sarah hasn't done any good since her "I'm ******* Matt Damon" video.
