Last year I bought a new LCD HDTV for my upstairs (high ambient light) living room.

This year I'm thinking of getting a new TV for my dungeon media room. Based on my little bit of web research I'm thinking about a Panasonic plasma (TH50PZ800U). The TV will mostly be for movies/games. I do most of my cable TV watching upstairs. Room can probably handle a 50 incher, not much bigger (I need to measure). Must be flat panel as I want to hang it on wall.

Any poly tech experts have thoughts on the best bang for the buck right about now?

Question: What will you be using for a HD signal? HD cable or blu-ray? Also do you use a Playstation or Xbox? Also how far away from the TV will you be sitting?

Inputs are an HD cable box and a PS3, both HDMI inputs.

The room is about 9-10 feet deep, couch is probably 8 feet from the TV wall. There's a 42 inch DLP in there now, and it feels a little small even sitting about two feet in from the back wall, but I do need to measure before deciding on a size.

Is your HD Cable 720 or 1080? I ask because a lot are still 720. Also how much do you want to spend?

          Cable is still 720p.

IIUC, the difference between 720 and 1080p is negligible to all but the most discerning viewer even at large screen size. Still, I'm doubtful I would buy a new set without 1080p, just 'cause I'm like that.

I've been drooling over a 46" Samsung which is on sale a Circuit City for $1050. Panasonic makes the highest rated sets right now but they cost twice as much.

It's harder to distinguish between the two if the set is smaller than 42''.

A quick scan on Amazon shows a pretty varied selection. LG and Samsung have a good showing. Prices have really gone down (esp. noticeable with Plasma).

LCD > Plasma in that size (<50 in). Samsung 42" LCD are pretty good right now ... or 46, if you prefer, but for the price difference ($700 for a 42", I think DanS quoted in another thread) seems silly for the slightly larger screen.

I have said 42" Samsung LCD, and am extremely happy with it (though I don't watch from very far away so I don't know in a larger space how it would do). Very crisp colors (1080p, in fact).

Yeah, CNET and some online reviews rave about the Pansonic I listed. Just not sure how much real difference there is in the real world. You can go up to the bomb Pioneer sets, but that's twice again as expensive as the Panasonic. I'm dubious regarding the real difference.

A couple more straight forward questions: for a low light environment, is Plasma still regarded as superior to LCD? For gaming, I've seen the plasma burn-in issue downplayed/regarded as irrelevant, should I beleive that?

Out of curiosity, are you gaming on a console, or on a PC?

Burn in hardly exists any more because of various tricks the manufacturers use. I find plasma to be slightly brighter and better for viewing at an angle but the truth is plasma isn't worth twice the price.

PS3 in the media dungeon, my PC is in my office. (Yes, I have many rooms).

That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Others agree with this? Plasma better (50" and up) but not 2x the cash better?

This is the brand new 46" Samsung I was looking at on Black Friday: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218015167704

Best Buy lists it at $1099 but I've seen it for $1050.

From when I was researching my purchase, that was what I was led to understand; Plasma was better only on larger (50"+) for the money, but not <50".
