True on the nominal pro-choice point.

But she's not really a moderate on immigration.

Her support of the "touch-back" proposal helped kill the McCain-Kennedy Immigration reform bill- basically they voted against cloture and kept debate on the bill open , effectively fillibustering it and preventing a vote.

"Touch back" was ridiculous. It insisted that the 10M illegals return to their country, then apply to come to the US (waiting 2-3 years to do so perhaps)... it assumed that the US consulates wouldn't be swamped by such influxes... yeah... right. It was unworkable, and McCain and others knew it. I think even KBH knew it, but it was the best she could offer.

I don't blame her too much for her decision- her constituents HATED the Immigration reform bill. I disagreed with her decision , but America is a democracy.

You're right. For some reason, I thought she voted for cloture. But I suppose that's her power; she seems like a moderate, even if the votes are very rarely there. 'Course, that just might be due to sharing the Senate delegation with Cornyn...

But I don't think that this was the deal breaker for McCain. I very much doubt that Palin's views are more moderate than Hutchison's on immigration.

Hm. Interesting point. Then again, it's entirely possible McCain's VP vetting team was composed of far right-wing Bush-veterans who convinced him that it'd be a good idea to play more to the base. Palin's much more of a base choice than Hutchison, just in general. Palin was a very odd pick.

Still, what other choice was there? Pawlentry... perhaps. Jindal- too early, Romney- McCain hated him. Giuliani- liability probably. Thompson- not exciting. Huckabee- worthy choice, charismatic, evangelical- by staying in the primary race he basically guaranteed McCain the nomination... perhaps a good choice, especially since his weaknesses are no worse than palin's (foreign policy, etc) and his immigration position is actually moderate. He opposes illegal immigration but understands its better to help illegals' children go to school rather than have them sit on the street and commit crimes... There weren't any other reasonable choices.

The McCain-Kennedy bill was already failing because it was getting marked as amnesty. The touch-back part was just something to try to make it look like it wasn't amnesty because Hutchinson has a long history of being indirect on the immigration issue. She basically doesn't think that real immigration reform will get support so she just tries to do things to prevent harsh xenophobe laws from actually working.

Texans aren't all against immigration and a lot of white people see it as necessary to the economy.

Another reason I like her is that she is one of the reasons that Texas is the 4th largest producer of wind power in the world and growing by large margins each year. Furthermore, there have been recent developments helped by her that have led to Walmart, HEB and other companies that have large energy uses (and won't be too affected by this current economic crisis) in Texas to invest in wind. In a few years it is possible that Texas will only be behind Germany in wind power production, and that includes the entire rest of the US. Of course, many environmentalists really hate her for this though, since she is in the wind energy's pocket but whatever I do not see the problem.

McCain didn't pick KBH because she is no longer the looker she once was. Palin's a looker. You guys aren't nearly cynical enough! I mean, if you're hetero and you are going to go down, might as well go down with a good-looking woman.

In all seriousness, the rumor at the Republican convention was that KBH's nose was out of joint over not being picked.

Oh, and Darkcloud, the reason Huckabee wasn't picked is because the Club for Growth would have had a ****fit.
