Why wouldn't they? Think about the location of Greenland as it relates to stuff like missile shields or transporting people between continents in small airplanes for whatever reason.

When the American air base at Thule was set up, they moved an entire village for that (edit: that, not what!). It's not unreasonable to think that a main reason Denmark is willing to substantially fund Greenland is that Copenhagen dictates the foreign policy.
