I was wondering if this had gotten much news coverage.

Arrest over killing of Red Caps

An Iraqi man has been arrested in connection with the killing of six Red Caps more than five years ago.

The Red Caps were attacked by an angry mob on 24 June 2003 while defending a police station in Al Majar al-Kabir, 120 miles north of Basra.

They had been helping to train police in the town of Al Majar al-Kabir in southern Iraq.

The deaths came after a gun battle between local people and a unit from the parachute regiment.

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, were ambushed earlier on the day before.

The officers killed in Al Majar al-Kabir were: Cpl Paul Long, 24, of Colchester in Essex, Sgt Simon Hamilton-Jewell, 41, of Chessington, Surrey, L/Cpl Ben Hyde, 23, of Northallerton, North Yorkshire, Cpl Russell Aston, 30, of Coton-in-the-Elms, Derbyshire, Cpl Simon Miller, 21, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, and L/Cpl Thomas Keys, 20, from Llanuwchllyn, near Bala in Wales.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said: "We can confirm that an individual has been detained by the Iraqi authorities in relation to this investigation.

"The case falls within the jurisdiction of the Iraqi Courts but British authorities will continue to provide assistance as required."

It seems a bit surprising that they would apparently get a breakthrough after so long.

Iraq no longer exists. Only economic collapse, bad behaviour by talk-show hosts, and the mutilation of small children are in the news.

        But answer me this:

I always thought that the Members of Parliments elected the Prime Minister. A Canadian friend of mine now tells me, the PM is directly elected by the citizens.

If so, what happens when the PM is from one party and the majority of Parliment is from the other party. Wouldn't that mean an immediate vote of no confidence?

Well, the British left shortly after that happened. I was there the next time coalition forces were in the area.

Either your Canadian friend is wrong, or you misunterstood him. In Canada and Britain, the PM is the leader of the party that wins the most seats in the House of Commons. In practical terms, though, many people base their vote on who they want to be the PM, but they still vote for individual MPs.

Technically, the G-G holds the reserve power to select a PM of his own choosing "on the advice of" the Canadian government.

Nope I've not heard anything about that, papers are full of incest rape and baby abuse scandals atm. Will let you know if anything pops up in the papers or on the news.
