Actually that's not quite correct. The intent was to prevent patronage of legislators by the executive.

But now I see that's all because it's never been looked at before by internet geeks who've stopped masturbating to porn just long enough to become constitutional scholars! Silly me!

I stand by my previous "Puh-leeze."
When both parties have a vested interest in ignoring the Constitution, that poisonously partisan nature disappears. You didn't know that? You aint too bright. Gee, you've cited Dems and Repubs violating this provision of the Constitution and you think that means they aren't violating the Constitution because they've agreed to do it Oh, and spare me the ****ing hypocrisy, you're on the internet debating the meaning of the Constitution too.

So what happens if teh pres, vice pres and sec of state get taken out, under your interpretation the leaders of the house and senate can't becaome pres if the pres has been voted a pay rise.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

            Stop bringing logic into this

Btw, Secretary of State isn't in the succession until after the President Pro Tem of the Senate and Speaker of the House.

The fact that she might be unqualified, as she has no foreign policy experience we could discuss elsewhere. Travel to foreign lands, even to meet heads of state, hardly makes one an expert in how the UUS should interact with the world. She should have been offered HHS, and Richardson should have been offered State.

My mistake I always thought they were no 3- does the chief justice come after the sec of state

No. He's not in the line:

Of course she's unqualified to be Secretary of State. She should be Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.

They wouldn't be appointed, I think the line of succession is a different matter

edit: actually the prohibition is on taking civil appointments, not elected office.

Wikipedia and my recollection of the federalist papers disagree with him, then.
